The Kroger Co. recently announced a new partnership with the ۿ۴ýUniversity Tiger’s Den Food Pantry as part of its Community Grant Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Foundation, which is committed to ending hunger in its communities and eliminating waste across its company by 2025.

Through the initiative, Kroger will gift the Tiger’s Den Food Pantry with $5,000 in gift cards that can be used toward the purchase of food and toiletry items at any Kroger store. In addition, a monetary donation of $5,000 will continue to supply the pantry with food products from the Food Bank of East Alabama.

“We are grateful for our partnerships and donors who support the Tiger’s Den Food Pantry and the university’s effort to meet the needs of our ۿ۴ý. It is our philosophical belief that ۿ۴ý who are struggling to avoid hunger should focus on their education, not spending time searching for ways to put food on their tables,” explained Tameka Harper, dean of ۿ۴ý.

“We firmly believe that there are so many things that others can offer to assist in lifting the burden on our ۿ۴ý so that they don’t have to choose between purchasing a textbook or paying for food,” continued Harper. “Naturally, most college ۿ۴ý and their families are feeling a very tight financial squeeze. ۿ۴ýۿ۴ý are no exception — and The Kroger Co. saw an opportunity to be of service.”

Located in Tompkins Hall and launched in February 2019, the student-led food pantry provides highly nutritious, single-serving foods that can be conveniently prepared by on-campus residents.

To date, Kroger’s donation is the largest single contribution the food pantry has received. Kroger focuses its charitable giving in several key areas: hunger relief; K-12 education; grassroots service organizations; and women’s health. In addition, Kroger supports organizations that promote the advancement of women and minorities, The Salvation Army and American Red Cross.

Others can support the food pantry through contributions of non-perishable food items, toiletries and feminine hygiene products, which can be donated by contacting Harper at (334) 727-8421 or tharper@tuskegee.edu. Charitable donations can be made through the university’s Office of Development at by specifying support for the Tiger’s Den Food Pantry.
