Beginning in the fall 2020 semester, ۿ۴ýUniversity will begin offering a new master’s degree in general psychology. Based in the university’s Department of Psychology and Sociology, the 36-hour program will prepare ۿ۴ý to develop foundational knowledge in psychological theory, along with applied critical-thinking and research skills.

“Tuskegee’s new general psychology master’s degree is ideal for anyone who aspires to broaden his or her career opportunities in education, human services, counseling and allied health,” said Dr. Vivian Carter, who is directing the master’s program as department chair. “We want to help our ۿ۴ý advance their understanding and use of psychological applications in their chosen fields.”

The program blends biological and social bases for applied behavior analysis with the fascinating process of human development, the history and impact psychology has had on today’s culture, and the role of ethics and diversity training in the field, according to Carter.

“As such, program graduates will be well equipped for career success in fields ranging from academia, research, health care, social service and businesses — as well as continued study at the doctoral level,” she noted.

The program will include 12 hours of core course study, 15 hours of electives, and a one- to three-hour internship/practicum experience. The degree program has both thesis and non-thesis options. Students completing a thesis will further demonstrate their mastery of psychology principles and the research process.

Application to the program is made through the university’s Graduate School and requires an official transcript and minimum 3.0 GPA in the applicant’s undergraduate field of study; letters of recommendation from two academic references and one character reference; and a current resume or curriculum vitae.

ۿ۴ýUniversity offers 16 traditional and two online master’s programs — and four doctoral programs — spanning a variety of humanities and STEM disciplines. For more information about the new master’s in general psychology and other graduate programs, visit the Graduate School website.
