The Accreditation Council on Education, Nutrition and Dietetics recently fully re-accredited ۿ۴ýUniversity’s Didactic Program in Dietetics. The five-year re-accreditation status is valid through 2022.
The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), operating under the auspices of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, is an autonomous accrediting agency for education programs that prepare ۿ۴ý for careers as registered dietitians or dietetic technicians. It ensures the quality of nutrition and dietetics education programs, as well as for advancing excellence in nutrition and dietetics education. The re-accreditation process ensures these values are met through a peer review accreditation process.
Tuskegee’s Didactic Program in Dietetics option is a bachelor of science degree program offered by the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences — a part of the College of Agriculture, Environment & Nutrition Sciences.
“The strength of our Didactic Program in Dietetics is our small class sizes, excellent faculty-to-student ratios, STEM-based curriculum and experiential learning activities we offer our ۿ۴ý,” said Dr. Norma Dawkins, interim department head.
The curriculum provides ۿ۴ý with the technical and academic knowledge to successfully compete for placement in a dietetic internship program, which qualifies them to take the national registration examination to become a registered dietitian. The degree program, currently under the direction of Dr. Ralphenia D. Pace, professor emeritus, prepares ۿ۴ý for other career opportunities, including roles as clinical dietitian, community dietitian, food service manager, gerontological dietitian, pediatric dietitian and consultant dietitian.
The program’s reaccreditation strengthens its relationship with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Through this relationship, ۿ۴ý, recent graduates and faculty benefit from ongoing professional development and industry insight. This includes attending the Food and Nutrition Conference Expo — the world’s largest meeting of food and nutrition experts. The annual event includes registered dietitian nutritionists, nutrition science researchers, policy makers, health-care providers and industry leaders, as well as includes programming focused on key issues affecting the health of all Americans.
